Process data: activities and their inputs and outputs

Process records describe production, energy supply, transport or other activities. Check the reference product, functional unit, geography and time. Exchanges and impact results are available only where the record makes them public.

Flow data: products, resources and emissions

Flow records identify products, materials, resources, emissions or waste, together with relevant properties and units. A flow record is not a complete product life cycle inventory and does not by itself represent a carbon footprint.

Choose data that fits your study

Scope and technology: Check the functional unit, system boundary, production technology and allocation approach. Similar names can describe different activities.
Geography and time: Select data that represents the location and reference period of your study. Read the coverage notes before treating a local sample as an industry average.
Sources and quality: Read the original sources, data generator, quality information and documented review status. Public availability does not imply scientific review.
Versions and citations: Keep the dataset name, exact version and link used in your study. Before comparing results, also check that units, methods and system boundaries are compatible.
